chro|ma|to|phore «KROH muh tuh fr, -fohr», noun.
1. one of the specialized pigment-bearing bodies in the cells of plants, especially of algae, such as a chloroplast or chromoplast.
2. a pigment cell able to produce rapid color change in the skin of certain animals by its contraction or expansion, for example in a cuttlefish or a chameleon.
